MILK THISTLE (Silybum marianum) | Milk Thistle is an herb that is native to the Mediterranean. It has been valued and used for centuries for its powerful medicinal properties. Today it is grown in many parts of the world for medical use, and well known for its use in the treatment of liver disease. In fact, studies have shown that Milk Thistle decreases or reverses damage to the liver, which may be caused by the use of prescription medications, antibiotics, heavy metals, and household pollutants. The main compound of Milk Thistle is silymarin. Silymarin helps prevent toxins from binding to the liver and helps the liver regenerate more quickly. It has also shown the ability to scavenge free radicals and stabilize liver cell membranes. The ability of this herb to draw out toxins from the body is particularly beneficial for other health conditions, like diabetes, cancer, kidney issues, gallbladder issues, and dermatitis. Milk Thistle has also been used as a treatment for digestive disorders, particularly for functional disturbances of the biliary system. It may also be beneficial as an anti-allergic agent. Milk Thistle has numerous benefits to the body; in addition to its detoxifying and anti- inflammatory properties, it is high in antioxidants. The bioflavonoid antioxidants help to increase the body’s immunity and slow down oxidative stress. Research has shown that Milk Thistle improves kidney function and is beneficial in supporting kidneys that may be damaged due to the use of drugs and radiation therapy, and for kidney damage caused by diabetes or infections. It is often used today as an anticancer support. Research is showing that it may in fact help reduce or slow down the growth of certain cancer cells, and may protect and prevent cells from dividing in the body. It may also be beneficial for pets undergoing chemotherapy as it may enhance the activity of certain chemo drugs. |
