LICORICE (Glycyrrhiza glabra) Licorice is an herb that has been used for centuries to support the digestive, respiratory, and endocrine systems. It is a powerful anti-inflammatory, and has immunostimulant, antiviral, and antibacterial activities. It helps with blood cleansing, lubricates and soothes mucous membranes, and eases tissue damage in the upper digestive tract. Licorice relieves epigastric bloating, impaired digestion and flatulence. Licorice has the ability to prevent free radical damage and inhibit the formation of free radicals.
CASCARA SAGRADA (Frangula purshiana) Cascara Sagrada is a medium to mild strength laxative and tonic. It is widely used in veterinary medicine. Common uses for Cascara Sagrada include: constipation, digestive complaints and dyspepsia. The peristaltic action of this herb is produced by cascaroside, which effects the large intestine. Cascara Sagrada is thought to be more effective than hydrolyzed aloins and is considered to be the mildest of the anthraquinone-stimulant laxatives. It helps strengthen weak colon muscles and helps with poor bile flow, which helps with the purging of hairballs.
OREGON GRAPE (Mahonia aquifolium) Oregon grape is an antimicrobial, anti-parasitic tonic that helps combat various forms of fungal and bacterial infections. It has a high content of isoquinoline alkaloids (mainly berberine and berbamine) resins and tannins, which have demonstrated antibiotic, immunostimulatory and sedative activities. An anti-inflammatory with strong affinities to the liver, digestive system and mucous membranes, Oregon grape stimulates bile production and helps relieve indigestion and malabsorption.
GINGER (Zingiber officinale) A commonly used food, ginger is also a stimulant, antispasmodic, antipyretic, carminative, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant. It relieves pain due to its influence on substance P, a nerve transmitter responsible for relaying the sensation of pain. In addition, it stimulates circulation, expels internal gas, improves peristalsis and intestinal muscle tone, helps with colic, reduces nausea and vomiting and inhibits platelet aggregation.
RASPBERRY (Rabus idaeus) Raspberry leaf has astringent, anti-inflammatory, spasmolytic and sudorific properties. Considered to be a safe and gentle medicinal food, it is rich in vitamin C. It is beneficial in treating digestive tract inflammation, diarrhea, diabetes and stomatitis. Raspberry leaf helps balance the laxative effects of the other herbs in this proprietary blend.
LOBELIA (Lobelia inflata) Lobelia contains mucous-thinning properties that help relieve bowel spasms. It causes immediate relaxation and expansion of the respiratory system, allowing oxygenated blood to flow freely. It is an anti-asthmatic, respiratory stimulant, and has antispasmodic, expectorant, alterative and diuretic properties.
CHINESE RHUBARB (Rheum palmatum) This herb is an astringent that helps with appetite, increases salivary and gastric flow and is beneficial in helping the body eliminate toxins by cleansing the intestines and removing waste from the bowels. Chinese Rhubarb also helps detoxify the liver by improving bile flow, and also helps improve gallbladder function, while building and cleaning the blood. It has cholinergic action, which causes peristalsis and increases water content of the stools.
