While encouraging your dogs to go indoors will help keep them more comfortable, there is a possibility there might be some confusion caused as your dog might think that he is encouraged to go indoors. However, if the right training is done, your dog will be able to eliminate at the right place indoors!
Inappropriate elimination is a relatively common problem and is usually addressed during puppyhood! If your dog is properly house-trained and has been having inappropriate elimination, it is essential to rule out health problems. One common reason for senior dogs could be incontinence and another would be if your dog suffers from urinary tract infection.
The ideal changing time would be every 3-4 hours or after every poop. However, if you’re working and aren’t home the whole day, you might want to consider having an alternative pee tray for your dog to eliminate.
Yes! Pee pads are a great asset to have especially if you are not home for long periods of time and to prevent urinary tract infection.
A healthy dog can typically hold their pee for about 6-8 hours but would benefit from an elimination of about 3-5 times a day. Holding pee for long periods of time might cause urinary tract infection.
Being consistent when training is very essential, especially if you’re a new pet parent and can’t resist those puppy eyes! Be patient and supervise your dog at all times. Having a schedule will also help - for example encouraging elimination after a meal. Reward your dog with praise and treats when he eliminates properly!
You may also consider using potty training sprays that will encourage your dog to eliminate on the potty pad due to its scent.
Different pet owners have different preferences and budget constraints! We prefer a more absorbent pee pad - this means thicker and heavier layers, and a charcoal-based pee pad as it’s able to absorb odour much better!
